Matej was still mourning his dead father. Killed by a poisoned Serbian arrow. Casualty of war. Ratimir, Matej's big brother was in a complete rage in the local church. He slammed doors and broke many sticks hitting the walls with his power.
One time he didn't even watch what he was swinging at. The stick almost hit Matej across the face, he just grabbed it, took it from Ratimir and broke it in half.
- What the hell are you thinking about defying Me! ME!
Ratimir raised his hand as he was about to slap Matej. But the old Grof came to his aid.
- Touch the Duke and there will be severe consequences. I'll personally ask punishment from King Borna. You don't want that...do you?
Ratimir lowered his hand. Proudly turned his head and went in the opposite direction and then thought.
"Marculius won't be forever there to help you little brother, you'll soon get what you deserve" - Then he smiled and proudly continued walking on.
Matej nodded to Marculius and offered his right hand. Marculius accepted it, made a slight bow with his head smiled a bit and turned around. Matej went awfully quiet after his father's death. But his new "fatherly" figure had became Marculius.
Something was coming up behind Matej, something was touching him in the back. He smiled and turned around.
- You shouldn't be playing war sister, that's reserved for men. - He grabbed her wooden sword and turned it against her.
- You should be more careful now that you got father's title of Duke. I could have killed you if this was a real sword. - She had a significant look on her face that Matej understood.
- Of course my sister, but I only let ladies and my sisters to come this close to me. Your silent steps can still be heard and identefied as a woman's. So that's why I let you so close.
-But what if the assassins are women?
Ban started laughing, but Neda was serious. She backed her hips with her hands and expected an adult answer from her younger brother.
- Hahahah, what the long face? You women are made for cooking and cleaning, not for playing with swords and playing war.
Neda then took the wooden sword from Matej and started hitting him with it. Matej tried blocking some of the hits but in the end recieved a hard hit on the head.
- Let this be a reminder that women can also hurt you so called men of war. If King Borna started recruiting women as soldiers, I would be the first woman to step up.
- I wouldn't let it.
- You cannot stop me. Don't try playing father now and...
They both paused and took a deep breath. Neda understood she hited a bad topic to talk about. She quickly thought up with another.
- Any news of Katarina and her husband? It has been an awfully long time since we had news from Calabria and the southern provinces.
Matej thought for a second, his young head was filled with information and knowledge of his father. He learned how to motivate people like his father. Having been educated by proffesional soldiers, priests as well as older Grof's, he showed remarcable potential to be better than his father.
- I'm sure enough that Borna will find them, as far as I heard a rescue party has been sent to investigate the southern provinces. Katarina is probably in the same village. They'll find them soon.
- Let's hope so. - Then then bolstered her chin with her hand. Making a small gesture.
Matej then excused himself and left to enter the church to deal with his brother.
Upon entering the church he saw priests praying, along with peasants and soldiers. Ratimir was among them. Matej thought for a second, then turned around and lef the church. Outside of the Church Grof Marculius and Lady Neda waited. They are leaving for the Capital of Istria. Matej's young body showed much promise and strength. People call him the "New Ban", although still mourning his father, he's proud to be called his heir.

A month or two passed. Matej didn't watch out on the time. It was a peaceful time. Doing royal things, big feasts and hunts. Then he got a letter from a friend in Istria and the capital of Croatia.
QUOTE: To Duke Matej Moreplovac
My old friend I need assistance, quickly make your way to Istria. Find me in the "Old howls" inn.
your old friend
Ivan
Matej thoght for a second, he went to his writing desk and touched the chair with his right arm.
- Nah, I'll suprise him.
Then he grabbed his shortsword and scheated it. Called his servant and went for his horse. He was being followed by a shadowy figure. It was late in the evening. His servant begged him to delay the trip until tomorrow morning. Matej wouldn't listen, if his old friend was in need he'll travel through hell and back for him. The servant gave up, grabbed his favorite weapon and went on his horse. While they were preparing in the stables the shadow figure dissapeared.
When they were set they went south-west. The only road going from Zagreb to Istria. On the way to their destination they had a pleasant chat about women, drinks and politics. His servant was also his right man in politcs, although from peasantry roots he was very intelligent. Matej valued intelligence not titles.
Something was quietly following them through the woods unnoticed. On half way to Istria there was a cart flipped over on the street.
- Someone forgot their goods I think - Thought Matej out loud.
- Let me check my liege - offered his servant who was very suspicious of this situation.
- Alright, but no word to anyone about this, that I'm letting you check something safe. Would make me look like a coward.
- Of course my liege.
Petar stepped down, his wide shoulders and strong muscles showed a hard working man, His short hair was filled with grey colours, although old he's still strong and clever enough to get out of tight situations. He carefully approached the cart, and hit it with his right foot. the cart turned around, two men screamed for a second, Petar quickly drew his sword, while Matej sat shocked on his horse, he didn't move an inch.
The two men quickly kicked over the cart and charged at Petar, they were uncoordinated, like drunk men. Petar fought the first bandit while the other charged at Matej who still was in shock. Then an arrow came from the woods, and striked the bandit charging Matej straight into his throat, at the same time Petar disarmed the first bandit held him. Then he punched him, got him up on his legs and put a sword near his throat.
- Who sent you? You filthy bastard I swear on my mother's grave you'll not live to see the next sunrise if you don't answer my question! - He then put his sword on the bandit's throat. Just to intimidate him more. He then turned his view to Matej, he was suprised to see an arrow in the bandits throat.
- My lord I didn't see you grabbing a bow and...
Then he quickly glanced at the woods, another arrow was incoming, he used the bandit as shield, the arrow hit the bandit's chest.
- Come down you bastard and fight me like a man! - yelled Petar as he held the bandit as his shield still.
- I'm not the one using another man as a shield. - Yelled a young voice from the woods.
- S-s-show yourself! - Yelled Matej who was still in a shock, he never faced bandits or a real opponent before.
The young marksman came on his horse towards Matej and Petar. He was hooded and so they didn't see his face.
- You're calling me a bastard? The one who just saved your liege's life?
Petar took only a moment to think, then he dropped the dead bandit down. Then he offered his right hand to the stranger.
- Thank you mister for saving my liege's life.
- I should be the one thanking you, those two were waiting for me.
- How so? - Asked Petar, with his sword still in his hand.
- Well that's none of your buisness, both of them are dead and that's that. Now I'll be taking their possesions as well as their letters. As an exchange I'll escort you to your destination, which seems to be Istria right?
- Correct, mister...?
- Just call me Ranger.
- Alright, Ranger then lead the way.
Petar approached Matej and whispered to him.
- Don't worry, this was your first engagement, there will be many more and you'll prove to be the blood of the great Ban, just that I don't trust this "ranger", I'll keep a good on him, just stay beside me, and have your hand near your sword.
Then the group continued their trip to Istria...

It was dark but warm. The darkness had already consumed the forrest and night dwelling animals have begun hunting. But everything fell to deep silence after horse galloping was heard. On the dark road of the old Roman Empire two travellers were heading their way south. One young and one old.
Two years has passed or maybe is was more. Since the young Croatian duke left his homelands and went on with the ranger into nowhere. It turned out to be a Polish noble. Matej was drinking, laughing and hunting throught those two years spent in Poland. His loyal servant stayed with him the whole time, and just enough time to teach him the techniques his father mastered.
Back on the road, they spot an Inn called "Sword of Justice" and went inside, there was a celebration going on which Matej didn't care about. They paid for their rooms and went upstairs to get some rest. But no rest was given since there was an ongoing brawl starting at the celebration, the young husband had a rival for his lady and two families colided. The losing family retreated upstairs where they just accidetly picked out Matej's and his servants room.
They came in quickly and locked themselves inside. To which they noticed that there was someone in the room, Matej and his servant already armed up were standing near their beds. The family pleaded for their support because their claim was "right". The servant whispered something to Matej's ear to which he just replied with a nod. They both drew their swords and motioned the family to back away.
The other family however grabbed some clubs and went on bashing down the door, to which Matej and his servant replied with a battlecry and a few broken ribs. The first members were sent flying over the wooden fence and onto the tables, others kicked down the stairs and some of them had their clubs chopped in half. The aggresors family quickly retreated from the Inn alongside Matej and his servant that after this little fight had no intention of staying any longer in this village.
But they were stopped in their tracks in the forrest by two royal Papal soldiers with two large halberds that could chop any man in half.
- What's your buisness in these woods? - Asked the first soldier, who had experience and years to boot.
- That's none of your concern. - Matej's servant spoke up as Matej was still trying to find something in the woods.
- These are Papal lands, you answer to me or do you want to answer to my weapon ? - The soldier firmly gripped his weapon more making a motion with it to the other soldier, who in turn as well made his sword ready.
- We heard there was a Croatian village in these woods, from the refugees of the war against the Templar Order during pope Gregory the First's reign, as well as the new village of the refugees of the war against the Empire of Serbia. - Matej answered calmly
- Those villages eh? Who's looking for em? - then he turned to his friend and spoke in Croatian - I think these are bandits, let's kill them and grab ourselves some loot.
- I don't think that's wise, you wouldn't want the King of Croatia being notified about your behaviour, would you? - an instant reply from Matej in Croatian as well.
The two soldiers looked in shock, they both looked at each other and again the older one spoke in Croatian.
- Follow us, we'll show you the way to the village, also I'm obliged to show you this recruitement papers that the new Camerlago has sent, any knight is welcomed to the service of God. - the guard then handed the papers to Matej and while Matej was signing it drank some wine and passed it to his friend.
Matej took out his quill and signed the recruitement papers, then proceeded onwards to the village.
