After Smelgar informed the freshly arrived Khagani in the Byzantine metropolis at the Bosporus about the latest correspondence with the Fatimids, she sat down and sent her own diplomatic note:

QUOTE:
Dear Alar, Sultan of the Fatimid Islamic Sultanate:
as you are going to intend to break your word of your foreign minister Dondarian de Vignolles, who granted peace for time of the tournament, we shall be so kind to send you a declaration of war as soon as "harm is going to befall Byzantine lands by your hands". I don't like people, who break their words. No mention was made to exclude certain areas from this peace.

Also as you made it appear, that your allies will stick to that promise as well, I hereby declare that any other country trying to break the truce during the tournament, shall instantly receive a declaration of war from Kazar.

We shall then come to the warmongers lands and burn it down - completely.

If you desire an honourable battle, have the courtesy to await the end of the tournament as we waited for the end of yours.

Signed and sealed

Dorenn de Almhuin, Khagani of Khazar.

QUOTE:
Dear Dorenn de Almhuin, Khagani of the Khazar,

Perhaps your Highness should mind her own business in the isolated Asian steppes and stick to your...mercenary status which you have so proudly used as a "shield" throughout the years. Politics are far more complicated than using the stick Your Highness.

While your statement is no doubt very bold, I don't think I need to remind you that your military strength is extremely...limited and therefore it, as well as your boldness, are very much dependent on the large numbers of troops that your new allies have. Without those, your troops are nothing more than a band of robbers, no doubt better suited to the mercenary status. So I advise you not to enervate me too much or I might just decide to wipe your people out after Jerusalem is dealt with and teach you a lesson in manners. And this time, you won't have the benefit of fighting two against one. With those odds any fool can be a good tactician and a brave knight.

Moreover, I don't think I'm breaking any promises. If you would have taken the time to properly read the letter, than you would have seen that I have stated clearly that no Fatimid troops will enter Jerusalem until the tournament is over. However, the arrangement does not say anything about other Muslim troops, nor does it forbid me to enter Jerusalem the very next day after the tournament has ended. You perhaps forget that while the other Muslim kingdoms have agreed to take on this campaign together with the Fatimids, in the end their troops answer only to their rulers, not to me. Which is why if they so decide to enter Jerusalem, than I don't see why should I be blamed for it, nor do I see why they should be blamed since they had made no deal with the Roman Emperor in the first place.

Lastly, I am perfectly aware that the tournament has not started yet and that it can be canceled in any moment. So your allies have no excuse whatsoever for not sending troops to defend Jerusalem since they could have mobilized themselves at any given time. After all, the Templars had detected my presence just South of Cyprus with 4 days before our invasion, the Serbians had detected Ifriqyia's troops with 6 or 5 days before the invasion and the Hungarian troops still proceeded to Constantinople regardless of those facts, not to mention that the Templars and the Romans hadn't changed their location at all.

So I'm pretty sure your allies are trying to victimize themselves, but in the end this invasion is done with their complicity as well simply because they knew we were coming and yet they did nothing to prevent it.

Since you have declared war on us, than I gladly accept your declaration of war. I have not yet decided whether I shall accept it as coming from a mercenary kingdom, or from another "noble" ruler with "Higher Principles". If I shall decide to be the latter, than pray your allies will win the war.

Signed and sealed*

Dear Alar, Sultan of the Fatimid Islamic Sultanate

Dear Alar,

I thank you for your lengthy essay. I will keep it as a reference for my daughter for when she starts primary school.

Oh, and btw, I am not hiding, you don't believe me? I hereby declare war on you since you broke your word and brought harm to the shires of Byzanz, the opposite of what you foreign minister has promised.

Any more lawyering around I shall also take as a petty example for my daughter for when she starts law school.

Regards

Dorenn de Almhuin, Khagani of Khazar.

Dear Dorenn de Almhuin, Khagani of the Khazar,

Did I just brought damage to the shires of Jerusalem? And all this time I thought I was attacking the lands of the Order of St. Mathew...

I just love pure arrogance, especially it comes from a monarch's whose capability to implement her own words simply lack. I'm afraid soon you will also have that as a lesson for your daughter.

Oh and do pray your allies win the war, because if they will not, than you will need more than Elite Militia and armed peasants to stop Allah's Fatimid children from razing your kingdom to the ground.

Alar, arrogant und forgetful Sultan of the Fatimids,

I suggest that you read the correspondence of your foreign minister again and this time carefully. If you are uncapable to do so, we recommend a trip to the university in Byzanz to elucidate the reading impaired.

Apart from that we shall return your promise regarding burnt shires.

Reading yet another letter from the Khazarian Khagani, Alar slowly took his quill and wrote:

QUOTE:
To the ignorant Dorenn de Almhuin, Khagani of the Khazarian armed peasants,

You intend on returning the favor? You and what army?

I find myself extremely amused because in many ways your threats resemble those of the King of France. And we all know how that ended up for him...

But in the meantime, I'm anxious to see you arms (if you posses such things) in combat and this time you won't have the benefit of outnumbering us two against one.

Perhaps you should take a better look at your army's equipment and organization. You might find that your words don't match your capabilities.

In his camp in the province of Nawa, Alar received news that the path towards Jerusalem was open. The small Roman garrison was the only thing standing between the city and him. So he took his quill and wrote to the Roman Emperor:

QUOTE:
To his Imperial Highness Smelgar, Protosebastos of the Roman Empire,

Your Imperial Highness, my spies have detected a large Templar fleet on its way towards Jerusalem and at least some of your troops not being anywhere near Constantinople. I therefore take it that the tournament will no longer be held and that the Christian forces intend on putting up a fight for Jerusalem after all.

The Muslim troops were, up to this point, satisfied with razing and pillaging the Christian monasteries and settlements around Jerusalem and had no intention of attacking Jerusalem itself until your tournament would have ended. If that would have been different, than I assure thee that Jerusalem would have been one of the territories to be conquered first.

But given these new circumstances I believe the deal is no longer valid, since you yourself no longer intend on hold on to it.

I therefore wish to inform you that in a few days Jerusalem will burn. Moreover, in anticipation of the Christian resistance to our fair and just rule, the male Christian population will be slaughtered. However, the women and children shall be allowed to leave the city unharmed, to the nearest Christian settlement.

Signed and sealed*

Alar I, Sultan of the Fatimid Islamic Sultanate

As soon as the letter was sealed Alar told his scribe: funnily, since almost all Christian settlements are already in Muslim hands, than I wonder where will those Christian women and children go?

Alar I
Sultan of the Fatimids

Peace by Upon You, Your Majesty:

The Turney will proceed as planned: you are well aware of this, as the lists are public.

Since you have spies in my nation (as you have previously mentioned on several occasions), you are also well aware of the location of my army. As you know, it is in Greece, and in fact is on the way to visit the Templar winery, which is nowhere near your lands.

The Templars are their own masters, and choose their own path. It is I, and not the Templars, who negotiated with your Vizier; the agreement was with me, and it stands. We expect it to be honoured, as we honoured the request made by your Vizier.

I have the Honour to Remain, Sir, Your Majesty's Most Humble and Obedient Servant

To his Imperial Highness Smelgar, Protosebastos of the Roman Empire,

Very well your Highness, I will not attack Jerusalem and I will stick to the terms of the deal. This however does not mean that other Muslim troops cannot claim it instead.

As you have probably learned already, the Persian troops are assembled in front of the city walls and the hours of the Byzantine rule in Jerusalem are therefore numbered. It will be up to the Persians how the city's population will be dealt with.
