The journey trough the Altmark      20.08.2010 16:01:42 --- 1 Year, 9 Months ago
It would take Abel 4 days to travel from Mecklenburg to Altmark. This is what the monks told him when he left for his journey to the capital. But Abel expected that his travel time would be 5 days minimum. He wanted to enjoy the beautiful landscape's in the regions of Altmark and Mecklenburg now he could finally travel again. And also reducing his travel time were the bandits that were strolling around in the Altmark. Ever since the war the Saxons had not enough men to patrol all the lands and keep such unhonourable people under control. Abel would have to keep his eyes out for such men. He hoped he would face them and that he could teach them a lesson they would never forgot. Do not hurt innocent people!

But for now Abel was spending his time making drawings along the way. Trying to capture the beautiful sights around him. After the first couple of hills and nice sights he started to quicken his pace. Till he saw one hill where he hoped to find a good rest spot. When he climbed up the hill he was astonished with what he saw. This wasn't some beautiful area, this was the horrible sight of war. It was clear that the battle of the Altmark was fought here. He had heard some rumours about it along his way. 12 Saxon peasants had tried to defend the Altmark versus 70 Polish and their Northern allies. As he could see the peasants hadn't stood a chance. Their weapons were laying all over the place and it was clear to see in the ground that they had been taking away after that battle. Abel wondered if they were still alive. He hoped the Polish would respect those Peasants as they were only trying to defend their country, their land and their families.

Abel then looked around the battlefield again. It was like he heard something. When he listened to it more carefully it seemed to be a song. A Polish song. A song that he had heard before. He thought about his earlier battle encounters with Polish soldiers and they always sung before going into battle.
Abel tried to sing along to remember the words. And while singing this Polish battle song a reassuringly calm took over his body and mind. Would the Polish always feel this calm when they charged into battle? Cause that might explain a bit of their power in battle. And how they remained calm during the fights.
And if the Saxons only knew a way to take this calm away. Abel pounded about a solution but he couldn't come up with one.

Abel decided to write these thoughts down in his Journal and make a quick drawing of the surroundings. As he would have to continue his journey quickly. The skies started to weep again, as they did more often lately then usual. God must be sad that Christians were fighting Christians in central Europe. If only both sides could see that this war was going on for too long now.
