The message from the King of England arrived too late to the Thane. He was confused over what had actually happened, but he decided to reply anyway.
QUOTE:
Gregory I,
King of England
Your highness,
I am not sure what happened in the fog tonight, but I do wish your army a safe trip home. I do not even wish the Christians to be haunted by the kind of ghosts we saw tonight.
The seas around the Norwegian coast belong to Norway and we use it to defend our land. If you would like to travel along our coast safely you need to ask us in advance as if you would have traveled through our land. We do not seek confrontation but we do not avoid it. So you protest against that we sail along our own coast when that is the fastest mean for transportation between our shires?
Norway does not seek a peace treaty and as everyone can see we have not taken part in any peace negotiations. We have only encouraged Denmark and Poland, also by our actions when releasing the Irish prisoners, to seek peace with their mighty enemy Saxony. We do not believe in any signed agreements but we are confident that our friends would come to our assistance if we asked for it.
Sincerely,
Sigurd Haakonsson,
Thane of Norway
