You get a fiefdom for free. You can ask one using Property -> Fiefdom menu
The Count of the shire must approve your request.
The ones marked !!! Instantly upgradable!!! will be granted to you instantly, the Count turn the automatic grant fiefdoms ON.
Some fiefdoms cost silvers because was abandoned and still have buildings or raw materials. You get a discount of 20% if I'm not mistaken.

See how easy it was?

I had an interesting situation, how many people are a count before they have gotten a fief?

A fief becomes the main source of silver later in the game.
So getting a fief should be one of the early things to be done.
It should not happen often to be count before getting a fief, I guess.

For a new knight it is possible
- to get a fief without buildings for free
- or to pay for a fief that has already buildings, that are left from a former owner (if one is availiable)

But with the starting silver it is only possible to afford a fief that has perhaps one or two buildings.

Only when you lost your fief because of a war (or inactivity) it is possible to get your old fief back for free.

Edit: I overlooked the post of James.

I understand that i can reduce the chance of disasters, but can I ever reduce the chance to 0%?

Yes, i see how to apply for a fief. I saw it two months ago when I joined, but I hesitated to get a fief. I didn't want to pick a bad one so I wrote to ask people if there were different resources, or if I could see what buildings were there before I picked it. I wondered if I could get a loan to buy a fief, and let me be clear with what I said earlier:

I was talking to someone in the tavern(one of the three times I met people there). I talked to this man about picking a fief. He told me that although some fiefs require money to get, that I could have my king assign to me one of the fiefs with buildings and that because it was assigned it would not have to be bought. At least that is how I understood him.

Well I was a count before I had a fief. In fact, I had to approve my own request for a fief . A very unusual situation no? Actually I had about 200 silver, so I bought the best one that I could, even though I did not know if that was actually a good deal.

Thank you everyone for answering my questions.

As far as I know one can't reduce the chance of disasters to 0.

Kings cannot hand out fiefs for free.

The only differences between fiefs are:
- the number of buildings already there; if there are buildings the fief will of course cost money
- whether the fief is in a shire with special resources (indicated by extra symbols on the map), in which case it will be possible (when the fief reaches level five) to chose an option that produces the special resource in addition to the three kinds of food, wood and stone. One can then sell the special resource and earn extra income.

It is almost certainly a good deal to purchase the most expensive fief one can afford - 200 silver will purchase a fief with 250 silver worth of buildings, so one has saved 50 silver and regained much of the time one lost when not having a fief.

they refer to different resources.

They generally fall in the same order as the other pull down (where you select fish, stone, etc) from so you can reference which is which if the letters don't match up.

Oh thats not that easy to describe, the Problem is that big parts of this game still foundate on the german version so "Ore" for example is "E" for "Erz" the German word of it...
you can orientate yourself better when you look at the order of the resources in the tabulation above your carts
the Order "up to down" is the same resource-order in the Tradecarts from the "left to the right"
The Number behind the letter describes how much of this material is in the province ...
My recipe is like "1000 Special Ressources in the province makes a price of 3,5 Silver each when you buy it"

When I upgrade my shire does that money come out of my own pocket? Because I don't make money off the shire, so that kind of stinks....

The money to upgrade shires comes from the nation - Kings and Chancellors can use "My Nation" to send the money to the shire, where the Count can then spend it.

Is there a place where i can see how much money is available to me for county upgrades? Like it doesn't sound as though i can just take whatever I want out of the nation chest, but i didn't notice a Shire treasury listed either.
