- Report soldier - said Ban as he was relaxing in his chair, the exhaustion of burning down Serbian villages was taking a toll on his body and shape. The tough conditioning has made him stronger and healthier. Not to mention countless duels and battles. He felt like a young king again.

- As we anticipated, we had a spy outside of our house - Answered Ivan as he was standing proudly at the door, being in the presence of a once king and serving under him has made him confident and with that confidence stronger.

- So the servants we payed to spy on Borna paid off. No matter, I wanted him to know anyhow, would be stupid to overthrow him in one night. How's the support for my claim in our lands?

- Well the newly conquered or liberated as you said Duchy of Sardinia is fully supporting Borna, even tough it was your idea to bring them civilization and technology back to them, as well as cultural tolerance.

- As expected, but they'll hardly have a big influence in Croatia, they're not even Croatian. - Ban took his mug with ale and drank some bit, then continued listening to Ivan

- The Italian provinces are neutral, they'll more likely defect to the Papal states or stay neutral if a civil war should arose.

- This keeps going better and better, what about Alberg and Salzburg?

- Well Alberg is fully supporting you, Salzburg as well but not su much as Alberg, both provinces are thankful for your heroic charge and defense against the Serbians.

- And I presume the rest is supporting Borna, except the province of Venice.

- Quite right m'lord. But although I might have a solution to this, I have two young sisters, one is 18 and the other 16. There have been many marriage proposals, even from the top ranking nobles. If I were to wed them to high ranked nobles, you would gain much more support.

- Excellent, I'll make sure you get a duke title when I become King again. - Ban could hardly restrain his excitement, yet more news were to come.

In barged Sinisa, younger brother of Ivan, Baron of Trieste, the border city between Istria and Aquileja.

he first bowed properly like to a king then continued.

- My'lord we have the troops support in Aquileja, they're taking arms as we speak, the court in Istria could be ours in the next few weeks. Also the troops from Alberg will soon be arriving in Aquileja, should I tell the loyalist troops in Venice to stay there and wait for reinforcements or take over the court?

- Let them wait for reinforcements, I'll have Borna dealt with quickly enough. - He then turned to Ivan - Ivan, are the assassins group ready?

- Yes m'lord, 3 highly trained assassins are at your disposal, they costed a lot but they may prove useful.

- Excellent, send them against Borna, I want his head and if he's smart enough to die from a poison blade, then the crown will be mine again. If the assassination attempt fails, my loyalist group will take over the capital and force Borna to surrender the crown.

- But what if he doesn't hand over the crown m'lord?

- Then his loyalists will burn, I'll then ask the pope to abolish Borna's title because he is no legal heir to me, the first king of Croatia after the tough times.

- But what if...

- Enough with the "What if's", the situation will handle itself. Now we're off to plunder some Serbian villages again, there is a lot of silver to be earned here. You Sinisa watch over with your troops this camp, I don't want Borna's spies around.

- Understood my liege. - Then Sinisa turned around and went to the guard-captain, while Ivan and Ban went off with their troops to pillaged the local villages and churches.

Dorenn's army was huge. The Anti-Serbian Coalition would be no match for this force. The Croats must have smelt that so they abandoned their newly conquered shire of Travunia. What was strange thatthere was no sound coming from any of the villages. There was complete silence. Also no churches were present anymore just smoldering ribble where they were supposed be.

They were riding down a road of another ghost town. No sounds from chicken either. Some kind of irrational fear was creeping up their spinal chords.

They approached the center of the village and there was this ...smell.... of rotten flesh. It was overwhelming. Some men went into the bushes and vomited. Then a scream from those men: Khagani, you have to look at this. There are pits with a lot of bodies and there is something else, Mylady... Speak, soldier, what is it? They are all headless and we found a pile of heads next to the rubble of the church!

Suddenly one of the corpses started to move and talk: Please, don't kill me! We won't, we are here on behalf of the Car of Serbia, speak, boy, what happened? Mylady, they just came here, Croats and their Allies and conquered this area. Then, after the main forces had left, one of their commanders with a small force ordered all people to the church. They were tortured and then beheaded, one by one. The children were stabbed to death. No one survived. I just played dead and smeared blood onto my clothes, the blood of my brother... the boy seemed to be brave up to now but his facade was clearly crumbling away now. He started crying and was shaken heavily by it as if he suffered from cramps. Dorenn took him into her arms and tried to comfort as best as she could but this boy clearly had seen the horrors from hell. They made us see the horrible decapitation. We prayed to God but their commander said, there would be no God for us waiting, that he had abandoned us! His name was...Ban Moroplavic, I shall never forget his face my entire life. He is the devil, I swear. He went back into crying and Dorenn held him in his arms until the sun set yet he did not stop. He ran out of tears but still continued to cry....
This is sickening...Scribe!.
QUOTE:
To the Slaughter King Borna,

I cannot believe the mess I am seeing in Travunia. You have clearly lost controll over your knights? How can you kill innocent peasants who have been there for centuries? These very peasants that will secure harvests and other things for their masters, the noble men from any country? You clearly did not plan to conquer Serbian shires, you are just deserting them. For what purpose? For this deadly sin, any christian will burn in hell, whether you have the Papal troops on your side or not. There is no excuse for such a heinous crime. If you do not punish the perpetrators, we certainly shall. But do not expect mercy from us as you have clearly crossed the rubikon and left civilisation behind you.

I am awaiting an explanation

Dorenn de Almhuin, Khagani of Khazar and Supreme Commander of the Travunian Army of the Serbian Coalition

QUOTE:
To Pope Urban III, King Friedrich von Redentin of the Papal states, King Denis de Fecamp of Burgundy, King Rhodry of Italy

Your Eminence and Your Excellencies,

I am deeply concerned about the conduct of war from the Croatian Coalition. We just moved into a deserted Travunia. Croatian Coalition forces have abandoned this shire and it seems, we have entered a slaughter house. All peasants have been tortured, tormented and beheaded thus killed. This is not the way of Christ to bring complete death to peasants. This is devils work. I therefore have to ask you, gentlemen, are you aware of the killing fields of Travunia? Are you aware that you are indeed supporting devil's work? I may be not as educated as you are but I do not believe that people and peasants should be exterminated as has happened in Travunia and that this cannot be the ways of the Lord himself.

It seems this war has gotten completely out of control. Please explain yourself.

Leaving Dorenn, Zbyszko, Dark Mike, Papikaze and the other commanders in the army command tent, Smelgar walked down to the river, intending to relax with a swim.

It was barely flowing, and the water had an odd and faintly disgusting taste. He decided against swimming.

Deciding instead to investigate, he made his way upstream. After walking for half an hour, he came to the source of the problem. In the distance he could see that a large tree had fallen into the river and that debris of some sort had floated up against the tree, and wedged itself in, forming a dam.

He moved on, intending to take a closer look, wondering as he walked: "What is that horrid stench?"

QUOTE:
To Dorenn de Almhuin, Khagani of Khazar.

I have no news concerning the events you have described, and occurred in Travunia Shire. Weeks ago, the Italian army was in Travunia but when we left those lands, the situation was perfectly normal, no civilian had undergone any type of mistreatment.

This is not to say that what you reported does not correspond to the truth.

However, I am certain that neither King Borna of Croatia, nor any member of the nobility of the kingdoms that form the antiserbian coalition, have responsibility for what happened.

Of course, wanting to be considered valid version of the facts given by the survivors, only low-ranking commanders may have ordered a massacre cruel, unnecessary and perpetuated against defenseless civilians.

Do not ever justify such an action, however, on the basis of a similar action can not be a deep hatred, that perhaps those who are guilty of such infamy, feel toward the Serbs, and unfortunately I can not exclude that they themselves were witnesses in the past of similar actions carried out by Serb forces of occupation of Croatian territory.

In the past, the Serbs have repeatedly brought death and destruction on Croatian soil, and in this case, their intention was the same at the expense of the Grand Duchy of Burgundy.

And you know I hate leads to another hate ....

Unfortunately, such incidents can not always be avoided, unfortunately does not allow a war to have a complete and total control.

Personally I have given clear and peremptory orders to my vassals and all their subordinates, civilians, women and children should always be saved, because the nobility of spirit is a core value in order to define Italian knight.

There is no honor in what happened ......

..... But who can be sure of the identity of those who have committed such an act.

I evaluated all the cases so far, and pretend a thorough search of possible culprits among the men of the coalition, which certainly will be punished if found, and personally I am ready to ask for their hanging.

But last hypothesis remains to be evaluated to rule out I can not forgive.

The Serbs are in desperate need of allies at this time, and passed the coalition responsible for such a thing, get the result of gaining other allies.

Do not forget that a week ago, the Croatian army was imprisoned by the Serbs in one of their southern counties.

Soldiers who have perpetuated the massacre in the Croatian Travunia wore uniforms, but who can have total confidence that for more aid were not the Serbs to commit this horrible deed naturally with Croats uniform?

I'm not saying this is the truth, I just say that I know Borna and I exclude that may be responsible for a similar action, and in any case will immediately ask him personally if he has some kind of responsibility and trust me, looking into his eyes I will understand ... ...
I think that even Ljudislav may have spotted this action, but who knows ..... maybe some of his subordinates ....?

This episode teaches us one thing, however, very important, the war is never a good option, when will this seems to be endless?

This war has been given by the Serbs remember the beginning well, and seems they have no intention to end it, since he always refused our offers of white peace that many times we have proposed to Serbs.

Rhodry, king of Italy.

a few weeks ago in Travunia

-...and then I chopped off his head and threw it in the river. This is becoming way to much fun. - Said Sinisa after another successful raid on Serbian Orthodox villages.

- They could never recognize us with this disguise and you even saluted me as Matej Horvat. Noone will know Ban Moroplovac plundered this villages. - then he started laughing while Ivan was quiet. He didn't like this one bit.

- My liege, they can recognize you. Then this whole framing the blame on Borna to get the people's support will be over.

- Oh come now Ivan, how could anyone notice Ban? Like they saw him before or knew him. They're simple peasants, even if they saw him the wouldn't have a clue to who he is, he's wearing a soldier's uniform and we're calling him by his false name.

- You never know how a boy can escape my wrath, know my name and rank as well and possibly call me the Devil - Ban laughed and so did Ivan and Sinisa

- That's preposterous, a young boy knowing you? As far as I know you never even greeted any boys while pillaging this lands. If he knew you and your rank and your real name, then he could report this to anyone.

- But how can they know? Really I mean really how can they know?

- Someone might help them by saying "Did Ban Moroplovac did this and here have some silver to refreshen your memory" and there you go, you have witnesses of your devil's deeds and....

The whole night they debated on how could someone knew Ban did it, but found no reason to someone believing it was him, since everyone called him Matej Horvat and he was in the uniform of a normal soldier.

Borna was sitting in his tent, watching on map and thinking. But then Kristian entered with letter in his hand.

"My liege. I bring news from Captain Tomislav and also I bring you letter of Khagani Dorenn of Khazar.

"First news, then the letter."

"Well, Tomislav successfully completed his task. He saw Ban's small division plundering few villages. They were all dressed like ordinary soldiers but Kristian recognized Duke Ban every time. Also Captain heard from some soldier of Duke Ban that they are preparing revolt in country. They are preparing duke's personal army in Venice, and more coming from Counties of Arlberg and Salzburg."

"That's all I need Kristian. Now go and summon for Captain Tomislav and General Karlo. And give me that letter."

Kristian passed letter to Borna and left tent.

Borna then started to read letter. He was amused. He started to write reply.

First of all, I'm not any slaughter King. Looks like you mother haven't teach you about showing respect to people which surprise me. But this is not a major fact so let's get to important stuff.

I guess I know who did all those slaughters and I will do all in my power to punish him. It is probably Duke Ban.

But this is non of your concerns. It is horrible, primitive and selfish action but why no one cared when Serbs were slaughtering Burgundian, Italian and Croatian people? So I don't give a shit what you or anyone else think.

I understand Duke's rage, but what he is doing isn't good and chivalrous and he will be punished for that.

Also spread word amongst your coalition that Italy, Burgundy and Croatia have nothing to do with it. It is small rebeled division of troops that spreads terror.

Borna
King of Croatia
Knez of Arlberg and Salzburg
Duke of Sardinia

As Borna finished letter Kristian, Karlo and Tomislav entered the room.

"Alright gentleman we have a situation inside our country. Duke Ban rebeled against me, disobeyed my orders and slaughter many inocent people. I know that you maybe agree with him in that, but Serbs aren't one to blame for being Serbs. Serbian so called nobility is to be blamed so keep your rage for them on battlefield.

Captain. Congratulations. You have just been promoted to General."

Tomislav bowed and simply said:

"Thank you my liege."

"Now here is plan of action. General Tomislav you will immediately ride to Istra and on the way there assemble as many soldiers you can. General Karlo you will go to Venice and try to at least stall them, but do all in you power to prevent them in whatever they intentions are. General Kristian you will stay here to protect me and also I want my bodyguards in front of my tent all the time. You will be with me inside of my tent all the time. He will send assassins on me, I may be good warrior on field of battle. But their skills are sharp as is blade of my axe. Did you understand everything?"

They answered as one:

"Yes my King."

And then Tomislav and Karlo walked out.

"Kristian, here is answer for Khagani Dorenn. Dispatch it by fastest rider.

"Yes my lord."

Kristian left tent and Borna then went and continue to look at map and think what to do now...

Dear Borna,

I am glad that this is just a glitch of some small army leader. Yes, surviving witnesses here named Ban Moroplavic behind this plot. Well, my mother remembered him as being stubborn and doing things his way, sometimes even being outright stupid. I don't envy you to clean up your interior mess and let's hope that this is just a single incident for otherwise the Croatians might be called the Huns for decades in this area. Not a pleasant title.
Would this not be the perfect moment for peace? War will lead only to bitterness and death and after all, you will have to live together as neighbours, whether you like it or not. Unless this little incident on these horrible killing fields is something of a bigger plan?

I just hope not.

War is a plague that tortures people for eternity with hatred and suffering. War changes people. He carries the seed of evil in themselves, and they planted in the hearts of the people.

Whether Duke Ban was involved in these atrocities, I can not say at present. If this is so, we condemn this terrible and heinous act sharply.

But this behavior is the result of years of tyranny of the Serbs. Hass has changed the people in the Balkans. But unless BOTH pages of the will for peace exists, the seeds of evil will spread further.

If you, Khagani Dorenn of Khazar, is concerned that this madness will stop, then I put you to the heart to keep not only the Catholic League, the consequences of war in mind.

For my followers, loyal servant of the Lord, I can assure you that in spite of the war, stand firm in your faith and behave honorably in battle.
Even the lies spread by Serbian ministers about alleged nefarious deeds of our missionaries, monks and priests, has not deceived us into thinking only of the evil in people. Each person will have to answer to God for his deeds. That is why we leave the punishment to the omnipotent and omniscient Lord.

In the hope of a speedy peace

Why do you bother us with cruelities you think one side has commited? Have you seen the slaughtered people in Burgundy, Italy and Croatia? It is a situation which has occured because people like you help Ljudislav that he can continue his crimes and murder. Without people like you that war could have long been over, but no, out of mercy you insist on more people being killed. It is not my fault that Serbia needs to be removed from history to end this war. It is their decision with the rejection of any peace offer.
