I`m pretty sure it`s a random event like storm/pirates/drought/etc, one could be a free knight and, as long as the event didn`t occur, his money are safe ... if the event occur, he will loose his money

about the question "how" ... maybe 2 other free knights could rob you ... or maybe a innocent-looking priest, or maybe a bad girl ...

It is a random event, but there is no explanation who robbed you^^

You will loose a certain amount of silver until 200 which is minimum.

Armies close by, or other free Knights do not influence it far I know, so you might even be robbed being on sea
